We often think of engaging our neighbors under the banner of the Great Commission: we want to “make disciples of all nations.” But that way of imagining discipleship is based on assumptions that can easily lead us down a wrong path.

What if, instead of “making disciples” out of your neighbors, you walked with them on a journey of discovery? How you imagine what you are trying to do in this Neighboring Life will change how you think, feel, and act when it comes to engaging your actual neighbors.

Have you ever experienced “making disciples” as an optimized, standardized, professionalized processes designed to produce the same basic product every time? Have you ever experienced following Jesus with other people on your rope? How do we act more like a rope team and less like an assembly line when it comes to engaging our neighbors?
